KTH professor Stephan Roth together with Associate Professor Hanna Barriga and 2MILab, has received 11 MSEK in support from Olle Engkvist Foundation for establishment of a lab for small- and wide angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS). This is a mainstay technique for characterisation of order at atomic to meso-scale (up to 300nm) in bulk materials and liquid systems. The instrument will fill a major gap in capabilities in the Stockholm region as no such instrument is currently available within the academic trio of KTH, Karolinska Institute and Stockholm University. A “home lab” SAXS/WAXS system allows for optimisation of measurement protocols and sample preparation that is difficult to do at beamline based systems such as those at Max IV. It
is therefore complimentary to one of Sweden’s major strategic infrastructures. Professor Roth is also affiliated to the German electron synchrotron facility (DESY) and is a renowned expert on X-Ray scattering methods.
The instrument will be located at the open Molecules and Materials at Interfaces Laboratory (2MILab) and will therefore be available to all researchers.
