The use of e.g. metal and ceramic components such as joints, screws, teeth etc are examples of biomaterials. The  interface between these materials and the body plays a crucial role in their successful integration. The way in which any of the multitude of molecules present in the body adsorb will control subsequent biofilm growth and ultimately the immune response. The various steps involved can be studied in detail with surface sensitive techniques.
